Lexmark survey finds Londoners the least wired

~ Research with YouGov puts capital at the top of wireless uptake ~

If you work in London you’re 1½ times more likely to be using a wire free computer and printer than if you were working in Liverpool according to a survey by YouGov, commissioned by Lexmark on the proportion of workers using Wi-Fi.

London leads the race to exploit wireless technology and the capital was named as the region of the UK that has the highest amount of Wi-Fi users in the workplace with 24% of workers across the country coming from this region. This was followed closely by the South of England (excluding London) with 22%, Scotland with 17% and the North with 16% of workers using Wi-Fi.  Of all Londoners surveyed, 27% use Wi-Fi at work in London compared with only 18% of all workers in the North. The survey of 2010 office workers consisted of 1045 females and 965 males.

“Wi-Fi enabled products offer more advantages in the office such as hot-desking where workers can move to any desk vacant and also allowing working from home when needed.,” according to Steve Purdy, UK Country General Manager at Lexmark at Lexmark. “As Wi-Fi is becoming more common in everyday life, so businesses are under increasing pressure to join the wireless revolution and are ideally placed to use this technology to take commercial advantage.”

“London is leading the wireless way, a fact clearly demonstrated by the switching on of Europe’s most advanced Wi-Fi network across the Square Mile,” Purdy said. “More than 350,000 people* now have access to wireless broadband, which means London will continue to top that table. But as more and more people experience the benefits of flexible, wire-free working, the other regions are sure to catch up.”

Commuting in the capital may therefore be stressful but workers are less wired once they get to the office according to, Lexmark, who commissioned the survey to celebrate the launch of its wireless range of printers.

Methodology

This survey has been conducted using an online interview administered members of the YouGov Plc GB panel of 180,000+ individuals who have agreed to take part in surveys. An email was sent to panellists selected at random from the base sample according to the sample definition, inviting them to take part in the survey and providing a link to the survey. (The sample definition could be "GB adult population" or a subset such as "GB adult females"). YouGov Plc normally achieves a response rate of between 35% and 50% to surveys however this does vary dependent upon the subject matter, complexity and length of the questionnaire. The responding sample is weighted to the profile of the sample definition to provide a representative reporting sample. The profile is normally derived from census data or, if not available from the census, from industry accepted data.

All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc.  Total sample size was 2,010 adults. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).
