Lexmark continues support of Earth Day
into its fifth consecutive year

~ uses April 22 to remind everyone that printing less and protecting
the environment should be a year-round activity ~

Lexmark, a leading developer, manufacturer and supplier of printing solutions, will support Earth Day – April 22 – with a range of activities designed to promote corporate social responsibility.

It all starts with Lexmark’s concern of green house gases. Because the destruction of the Rainforest is the second largest cause of global warming, Lexmark has decided to lead a unique environmental campaign in April 2008. During the whole month, Lexmark will contribute to the Rainforest Foundation UK1 to help protect 242 hectares of rainforest through a scheme with its business partners.

Lexmark intends to become a valuable player by implementing environmental best practices in its daily activities. This is the concern of each of us. Earth day initiatives include information through regular e-mailing on Lexmark strategy to print less, information on best printing practices at work for Lexmark employees, supported by posters on eco-behaviour at the office.

Throughout Earth Month, Lexmark UK is working with existing customers to educate them about the importance of printing less. A series of UK initiatives advising customers how best printing practices can map on to a broader CSR campaign will form the heart of this campaign.

“Earth Day has been a key time to recognise the need to protect our environment since it began in 1970,” said Raj Meghani, Head of Marketing PS&SD at Lexmark UK. “At our Lexmark European offices, we have been supporting Earth Day for five years, and have seen some really positive steps forward with regards to printing practices thanks to our ‘Print Less’ campaign.”

She added: “Earth Day gives us the opportunity to focus these efforts, and celebrate the past successes and future challenges in continuing to recognise our impact on the environment and our contribution to reduce this impact. This is something we are committed to, completely.”

To mark Earth Day, Lexmark has also created a set of tips for each one of us looking to improve their own printing practices, at home or at work:

1- Avoid printing e-mails and drafts
2- Use scan to e-mail to archive and send your documents instead of printing
3- Use print preview to avoid wasteful printing mistakes
4- Print only the page you need, not the whole document
5- Use duplex and multi-up printing to save paper
6- Give preference to certified papers (FSC or PEFC certifications or EU flower labelling), it helps save natural resources
7- Use workgroup printers rather than individual desktop printers whenever possible, it saves energy
8- For printers at home, give preference to wireless. Sharing this device amongst several users reduce hardware units, waste on the run and power savings by reducing appliances
9- Use the draft mode to save ink or toner and reduce cartridge waste
10- Prefer original high yield cartridges to avoid unnecessary shipments and waste
11- Use separate disposal bins for your paper and cartridges
12- Send back your empty cartridges to Lexmark for responsible recycling and re-use
13- Send back your end of life’s printers to stores or appropriate collection points for recycling
14- Do not de-activate the power saver mode of your laser printers, it reduces energy consumption
15- Unplug your printers at home when not in use, to reduce your energy consumption.
