The Lexmark European Art Prize 2004

Building on the success of its inaugural year, Lexmark International, the leading printer manufacturer, today launches the Lexmark European Art Prize for 2004; Europe's only pan-European painting prize, which seeks to support the recent revival in painting as opposed to conceptual art.

Last year over 2000 paintings by artists from 33 countries entered the prize to win €30,000 with the eventual winner, UK based artist Christian Ward, scooping the top award.

This year the competition has been extended to offer a £5,000 prize for an overall UK winner as well as awards for the best painters in the regions, covering Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and in England, the Northeast, Northwest, Midlands, Southeast and Southwest.

Once again Professor Brendan Neiland, Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools will lead a team of eight judges, all figures from the European art scene.

Commenting on the launch of the 2004 Lexmark European Art Prize, Professor Neiland says: "We were amazed by the volume and the standard of the paintings in the first year of this prize, illustrating that the European painting movement is enjoying something of a renaissance. We urge artists to enter this prize as it really gives them a unique opportunity to display their talents on the European stage ."

Paul Morris, Managing Director of Lexmark UK commented: "We were thrilled with the response we got to the prize in 2003 and are looking forward to building on this success in the UK and receiving even more entries in 2004. We are delighted this year to be able to offer a UK prize, as well as the overall European prize, to help further the career of a British artist and give the painting scene in Europe a boost."

The competition will continue to develop Lexmark's existing relationships within the art world and reinforces the company's growing commitment to the arts which includes its award-winning website and portal, www.print-art.com, that provides a virtual gallery of fine art, delivering printable masterpieces direct to a PC.
